Acton Academy is a place where children are free to continue that path to naturally find a love of learning.
Many of today’s schools tout the world of “21st Century Skills,” which is based on asking questions to encourage critical thinking, inquiry, and reasoning. Students are expected to evaluate, integrate, and translate ideas to solve problems while completing teacher-led projects. Yet, the learners are not given the potential of learning through their own process. It is laid out for them. They often aren’t allowed to make mistakes and learn from their failures. Failure, rather than becoming another opportunity to learn, becomes laden with fear. At Acton, we value 21st Century Skill learning in the truest form–through Socratic discussions and real-world projects through collaboration with their fellow peers.
We offer a truly different and freedom approach to their education. Supported by the latest in technology and our own community awareness, we move beyond lectures, homework, tests, and even grades. Teachers become Guides to be there only when absolutely needed, someone that allows for the flow of a studio between the learners, giving them their space while keeping it safe. The Studio is filled with multi-age learners for collaborative work–as partners and inspiration. Our schedule allows for flexibility so that each learner can carve their own path and lead by their own inspiration.

Acton Academy takes a different approach to education with self lead learning by offering guides in the studio rather than teachers. There is no lecturing, no homework given, and the guides do not even answer questions.
The role of the guide is to propose challenges and quests, help learners set boundaries and studio contracts amongst their tribe, and help learners find their calling through their own hero’s journey.
Amanda Heller, winner of “Teacher of the Year” at Dune Lakes Elementary school is the lead guide and co-owner of Acton Academy of 30a.
